How to Get Faster at Sudoku
Solving speed comes from search order and pattern recognition, not from thinking harder. Seven habits that cut sudoku solve times, and the two that matter most.
Once you can reliably finish a sudoku, the next question is how to finish it faster. The answer is not "concentrate harder". Speed in sudoku is almost entirely about search order — how quickly you find the next placeable cell — and that is a trainable habit rather than a talent.
If you are still learning the techniques themselves, start with the four techniques that solve most puzzles and come back to this. Speed built on shaky technique just produces confident mistakes.
1. Use the same scan order every time
Most time in a sudoku is spent looking, not solving. Wandering the grid re-examines the same cells repeatedly and misses others entirely.
Fix an order and never vary it: digits 1 through 9, and for each digit, boxes top-left to bottom-right. It feels mechanical, and that is the point — a fixed route means you cover the grid completely without deciding where to look next. Deciding where to look is the expensive part.
2. Restart the scan after every placement
A placement changes the grid. It removes a candidate from up to twenty other cells, and it frequently creates an immediate follow-up somewhere you already checked.
Fast solvers do not place a number and move on. They place it, then immediately check the row, column and box it just constrained. Chains of three or four placements are common, and catching them is nearly free — you are already looking at the right part of the grid.
3. Search regions, not cells
The instinct is to look at an empty cell and ask what fits. It is the slowest possible approach, because it requires checking nine digits against three regions for every cell.
Searching by region is the opposite: pick a nearly-complete row, column or box, and find homes for its two or three missing digits. Fewer candidates, faster resolution, and it naturally directs your attention to the parts of the grid that are ready to be solved.
Rule of thumb: work the regions that are most full. A box with seven digits placed will usually resolve. A box with two will not, and staring at it is wasted time.
4. Write fewer pencil marks
Full candidate notation is a hard-puzzle tool. On easy and medium puzzles it costs more time to write and read than it saves.
Mark selectively: only in the region you are working, only when scanning has genuinely stalled, and only for the digits in question. If you find yourself annotating the whole grid on a medium puzzle, the problem is usually that you skipped a scan, not that the puzzle needs notation.
Auto-candidate features are worth turning off once you know the techniques. They are a good teaching aid and a bad training aid — they do the elimination work that builds the pattern recognition you are trying to develop.
5. Learn to see completeness at a glance
Experienced solvers do not count the digits in a box. They see "nearly full" or "nearly empty" the way you read a word rather than spelling it.
This comes purely from volume, but you can speed it up by deliberately practising the recognition: before you start solving, take five seconds to note which three regions are most complete. Over a few dozen puzzles the assessment becomes automatic, and you stop wasting attention on regions that were never going to resolve.
6. Stop checking work you have not finished
A common time sink is verifying placements you have already made. If your technique is sound, the placement was forced and does not need rechecking. Re-verification usually comes from anxiety rather than doubt.
The exception is after a mistake. If you find a contradiction, stop solving and find the error — do not keep placing digits on a corrupt grid, because everything after the error is wasted.
7. Practise under actual pressure
Solving quickly when nothing is at stake and solving quickly when it matters are different skills. If your times are good alone and fall apart in a timed challenge, the gap is composure, not technique.
The cheapest way to train that is to play against someone. In a real-time 1v1 match, hesitation is immediately expensive, and the format punishes exactly the habits that slow you down: rechecking, over-annotating, and searching cell by cell. It also punishes guessing, so it does not train recklessness.

What to expect
Improvement is not linear. Most people see a quick early gain from fixing their scan order, then a plateau, then another gain when regional pattern recognition starts working. The plateau is normal and it is not a sign you have hit a ceiling.
Two habits produce most of the improvement: a fixed scan order, and restarting the scan after every placement. If you only change two things, change those.
